Megan Brooks is creating community for Black families with autistic children

Story by: Taneia Surles

Autism is an often-stigmatized development disorder and is consistently misunderstood by many. In the Black community specifically, mental health is frequently swept under the rug, and those who need support from their loved ones, often don't feel comfortable seeking it due to generational stigmas.

Fortunately, there are people like Megan Brooks in this world (more specifically in Atlanta), who are creating community for Black families with autistic children.

Megan Brooks, Founder of Significant Pieces

Megan is the founder and CEO of Significant Pieces, a community focused on supporting Black families with autistic children. She created the foundation after her second child was diagnosed with autism at the age of two. After hearing her son’s diagnosis, Megan was saddened but quickly developed a game plan, doing what needed to be done to create a safe and accommodating environment for her son.

Through this journey, Megan has developed a passion for autism awareness. Her passion drove her to create Significant Pieces, where she shares her journey of being a mother to a Black autistic child, and builds community for others in similar situations. She has created a safe space in which families can share their experiences in an open and caring online environment.

On the Significant Pieces website, you can access Megan's online journal pieces, donate to the organization, and review links to autism information and resources. All donations to Significant Pieces go towards providing support to families who need financial help with therapy sessions!

If you are a family or know of a family who has a child with special needs and could use help, you can reach out to Megan at info@significantpieces.com.

Megan's passion and drive is helping to diminish the negativity surrounding mental health in the Black community, and bringing more awareness to autism as a whole. Her work is extremely important and so very necessary for families who are affected.
