Atlanta Airbnb hosts push back against new regulations

About 4,000 Airbnb’s could soon no longer be allowed to operate in Atlanta.

A new ordinance passed by city council, now requires Airbnb hosts to be physical residents of the city of Atlanta, pay $150 annually for a short-term-rental license, and pay the city an 8% tax rental fee.

The ordinance also only permits Airbnb owners to operate two listings at a time, and one has to be their primary residence.

More than half of Atlanta’s Airbnb operators reportedly have more than two listings, putting around 4,000 listings in violation of the new rules.

When the ordinance first rolled out last year, its primary purpose was said to be to crack down on party houses. The ordinance put penalties in place that force an Airbnb owner to pay thousands of dollars in noise violation fees if a party takes place in their residence.

Many Airbnb hosts have said that they support heavier penalties on party houses, but believe the city is now over-regulating a growing industry.

The new ordinance was originally supposed to take effect in March. Then June. And now it has been pushed back once again to Sept. 6, after several complaints from hosts that the application process is too tedious and confusing.
